Here's some pictures of Stephen doing a hand carved neck. It takes a lot of skills to do this so, it was very exciting to watch the complete process.
In SCGC necks are devided
in 3 categories:
1. Standard
2. Hand carved
3. Hybrid
The standard neck is made fully on the CNC. The hand carved neck is made by hand and mostly that's because of custom specifications. And there is a hybrid, partly made on CNC but with some custom specification done by hand. The hand carved is the most fun, because it makes you feel like a real luther! ;-)

I mentioned CNC and that might sound huge, but in reality it covers only a minor part of the processes in SCGC. Richard has a clear rule about using the CNC machine: "We never allow the CNC to dictate the design of the guitar or a component."
Sometimes the CNC is used to assure quality in the process. And at the other hand it'll never be used if there is a chance of affecting the sound quality of the guitar, or if it is compromising on what could be called luthery ethics. So CNC is mainly used for repetitive work like making bridges, carving rough shape of necks and cutting inlays for the logo.
We started by drawing the shape of the neck on a piece of mahogny. Then the contour is cut with a bandsaw. To get a rough shape, Stephen uses sohpisticated fixtures. And with those fixtures he routs the rough shape of the neck.
On the neck there is the male part of the dove tail. It is made on the same fixture as where the female part on the body is made on. This way a good fit of the neck to the body is assured.
Then the real handwork starts. With a rasp and file the final shape is made. The heel is made round and it gets a V-shape. The final shape of the neck is made, and it's blended in the heel and the peghead. Also the diament shaped dart is made by hand. These are processes where real skills are needed.
The dart refers to an older construction where the neck and the peghead are two pieces of wood. And to get a good fit, they used to have a neck that ends with a dart shape in the peghead. This look a feel is still very popular, so SCGC still makes them. But it's only because of cosmetic reason now.
The pics are in the galery.
